Gold King Mine
Take a short drive out Perkinsville Road (1 mile past the Fire Station) to see the Gold King Mine. This is not your usual museum. It’s a large and eclectic collection of buildings, vehicles and equipment scattered around the site of the old Haynes Copper Mine. The children will enjoy the numerous chickens, donkeys and rabbits on site while the parents can browse the jumble of old machinery. Open year round, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. $4.00 Admission.
Montezuma Castle National Monument
Gaze through the windows of the past into one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America. This 20-room high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a 1,000 year-old story of ingenuity and survival in an unforgiving desert landscape. Marveling at this enduring legacy of the Sinagua culture reveals a people surprisingly similar to ourselves. Adults (16 and over): $5.00
Montezuma's Well National Monument
Montezuma's Well is a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument located approximately 11 miles to the south.
Prescott National Forest
Offers opportunities for hiking, picnicking, camping and a number of prehistoric Indian sites. At the lowest elevation, the primary vegetation is of the Sonoran Desert type. As the elevation rises, chaparral becomes common, followed by piñon pine and juniper. Above that, Ponderosa pine dominates the landscape.
